Have you seen a chough in Jersey? Or in one of the other Channel Islands? Then we would love to hear from you. Any information we receive will go towards safe-guarding the future of this charismatic species.
Choughs released or hatched in the wild in Jersey are fitted with a unique combination of leg rings. This helps the team identify individuals and monitor their movements.
Take Lee for example, he can be identified by his black over white leg rings on his left leg. The white ring tells researchers he was born in 2015.
A metal ring on his right leg has a Jersey museum and a unique code engraved on it. This is almost impossible to read in the field.
A list of all the choughs and their ID rings can be found here.
A word of caution: if you are not familiar with seeing choughs in the wild it can be easy to confuse them with other corvids. Checkout our handy guide to corvid confusion for species found in Jersey.
